Printing Methods For DVD and CD

August 30th, 2010

When it comes to placing data onto a CD or DVD, we often will look for ways in which to clearly label it so the information which it contains is easily identifiable. When these discs are used for private, home use we will often be content with simply writing on the disc itself or making a rough label of some kind. However, when it comes to requiring these discs for our business-especially when we are looking to create multiple CD/DVD duplications, the ways in which these discs are labelled is crucial.

Printing onto discs ourselves is something which can take an excessive amount of time and money and if not done correctly, can result in a badly manufactured product. It is for this reason that many businesses turn to the service of a disc printing company who can help make their CD/DVD printing look professional and effective. In order to print on duplicate discs, the company in question will have designers who use different design software in order to create the layout of the disc. If you have your own design ideas for your disc, they will be able to notify you of what will work best with the size and shape of the disc in order to create the best design for your needs. This part of the design process may also include the packaging for the CD or DVD. There are different methods of printing, but in order to choose the one which will provide you with the best results for your needs, you will need to understand how these different processes work. This will be due to the finish which each type will provide you with which will limit and benefit you in different ways.

Screen printing has been evolved for use in a wide range of applications such as t-shirts and other textiles which is often referred to as silkscreen; however, it is also a technique which is used for printing onto compact discs. The process involves applying a thick layer of ink onto a stencil, scraping the excess ink off and forcing the remaining ink through the holes of the stencil in order to create the image on the surface of the disc. However, although this is a rather simple method of printing, there are some disadvantages which stem from this which can affect the result of your overall design. Due to the thick applications of the ink, fine lines and details can disappear-especially in the case where you have very small lettering. In the instance where you are wishing to place your design on a white background, you will need to take this into account with your design as the colour of a disc is metallic, and not white. Ink will also appear as a different colour on the clear inner hub, the mirror hub and the main surface of the disc-even though the same colour is applied. It is for this reason that the best method of disc printing for your business is likely to be digital printing.

Most printing companies now look to digital printing for their customers due to the vast amount of advantages which come from this method compared to screen printing. Firstly there is the overall finish of the discs. As there is no need for the messy application of inks, etc, the quality of any images you have printed-including photographs will be as realistic as the original image which is emphasised by the high-gloss finish ensuring you have a consistently high quality finish every time. Digital printing also saves more money for both the company and the customer. Due to its quick nature, there is less chance of poor quality prints which can result in wasted discs when the finish is not what we intended. Thanks to the nature of the printing procedure, there is also less need for ink and thus, less ink is wasted on the whole. Finally, with no need for time consuming setting up of the equipment, no plates, solvents and excessive need for cleaning afterward; the digital process is also more time effective. This means that not only will the duplicate discs be printed in a shorter space of time, but they will also be sent back to the customer in a timely manner.

Although each printing method can offer different effects and advantages, in terms of getting the most for your money and a professional finish, digital printing is best for your needs. When you take into account the need for speed when printing duplicate discs, digital can not only ensure you get the finish you ant, but also the speed which is required in today’s fast paced business world.

Garmin Forerunner 305 and 405 GPS – What’s the Difference?

August 27th, 2010

I have a Garmin Forerunner 201 which is showing signs of age and a hard life!  It has served me well over the last few years and I’ve been looking at buying a new Garmin GPS to help with my running training and have settled on one of the new Garmins – But which one?

Well looking at the Garmin Forerunner 305 and 405 specs they do pretty much the same thing as far as training is concerned. Both will record time, distance, laps routes etc.  What the 405 has done is to add a lot more technology into a much smaller package.

Connecting to your computer

If you want to connect the Forerunner 305 to your computer this has to be done with the good old USB cable., which is fine. The Forerunner 405, on the other hand has built in  ANT technology which allows it to automatically transfer training data to your PC when it is in range (the PC has to be switched on, of course!). The same technology also allows you to transfer training data with other Forerunners 405s so you can try one of your running partners workouts! The Forerunner 405 comes with a USB ANT dongle so your computer is ready to receive data from the GPS.

Touch Bezel

What really sets the Forerunner 405 apart is that it is relatively small and very comfortable to wear, and the bezel is used to navigate round the various screens and menus – this works very well when you want to change screens while you are training.  What is really good is the ability to drag your finger round the bezel to scroll menus and change values, like running speed etc. To turn on the back light you simple touch two areas of the bezel Simultaneously.

Overall the Forerunner 405 seems more advanced than the Forerunner 305 (it’s more expensive, so should be!). But there are a couple of things to consider: Firstly the face of the 305 is slightly larger overall and in some respects has a clearer display – and secondly the battery life of the 305 is 2 hours longer than the 405 at 10 hours (although the Forerunner 405 does have a two week power save mode)

Well, that’s about it, as previously stated, in terms of accuracy and basic training functionality both GPSs a pretty much equal. You just need to decide if you want to pay an extra £50.00 or so for the technology built into the Forerunner 405.
